The WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS currently being held in Daegu, South Korea. Day 1 – 27 August : WILLEM COERTZEN representing South Africa, commenced his challenge for the Decathlon. The first 5 events were very solid starting with the 100m in 11.16, then the Long Jump 7.37m, Shot Putt 13.48m, High Jump 2.02m, and 400m 49.20 to finish the day in 14th place with 4,099 points. With the humidity nearly 70%, LEE MCCONNELL ran an even paced 400m to finish in 3rd place with a very impressive 52.75 to qualify for the semi-final. Day 2 – 28 August : In 2nd semi-final of the 400m, LEE MCCONNELL although being drawn in lane 8, was in touch at the 200m and eventually finished in 7th place with 51.97. Taking into account the hot & humid conditions, the time holds up to her SB of 51.01. WILLEM COERTZEN unfortunately after the 7th event of the Decathlon, the discus, he had to pull out of the competition with injury. Day 4 – 30 August : YAMILE ALDAMA made her GB debut in the qualifying of the Triple Jump, and with some 17 jumpers in Pool 2 she produced a spectacular seasons best jump of 14.35m, to finish in 2nd place. This takes her into the final on the 1 September as the 5th best qualifier. Day 5 – 1st September : MARILYN OKORO started her 800m campaign in confident fashion, by finishing 4th in a hotly contested race, and her time of 1:59:74 which was just outside her SB. YAMILE ALDAMA looked supremely cool as she stood on the runway for her 1st jump in the Triple Jump final, she hit the board with little to spare, and the jump when measured was 14.50 and another SB. YAMILE managed 1 more legal jump, and eventually finished in 5th place, fantastic. | |
